Wet ground near a drainfield: information for an assessment

Wet soil near a septic system should not be diagnosed from a photograph alone. Weather, drainage and wastewater-system conditions need to be considered before deciding on excavation or replacement.

Keep the area clear

Keep people, pets and vehicles away from potentially contaminated ground. Do not dig drainage trenches, drive over the area or divert water into the septic system. Describe the location from a safe distance.

Record the pattern

Note recent rain, whether the wet area persists during dry periods and whether indoor plumbing symptoms or alarms occur too. Share known drainfield plans and previous repair records.

Ask for evidence

A proposal should distinguish observations from a confirmed failure diagnosis. Clarify which assessments are needed, whether permits may apply to proposed work and what the provider can establish before excavation.

Before booking

Tell the contractor if the area has been landscaped, paved or driven over since the system was installed; those changes may affect access and evaluation.
