A symptom is a starting point, not a diagnosis
Slow fixtures, odors, recurring backups and wet ground can have different causes. Describe which fixtures are affected, when the issue started and any recent pumping or repairs. A blocked building drain is a different job from a failed septic component; the assessment should distinguish them.
Agree on a repair scope
Ask what has been observed, which component is suspected and what additional inspection is needed. A written proposal should separate diagnosis, excavation, parts, disposal and restoration. Ask about any warranty terms and exclusions before approving the work.
Check permits before work begins
Tennessee requires permits for septic construction, modification and repair. Confirm the applicable requirements with TDEC and the provider before authorizing work. Request the provider’s current credentials for the proposed scope; a pumping service and a system installer are not interchangeable.
See TDEC septic permit guidance for state requirements.
