Start with existing information
Look for a previous pumping invoice, property records or a system drawing. Share known locations with the provider, while recognizing that older sketches may not precisely match what is underground.
Avoid exploratory digging
Do not probe, excavate or open suspected covers yourself. Septic systems can be near other buried infrastructure, and access openings create hazards. Ask the contractor how locating will be handled before work begins.
Clarify charges and restoration
A quote may separate locating, excavation, pumping and restoration. Ask what happens if access is deeper or more difficult than expected and who approves extra work. Confirm whether adding a suitable riser would simplify future service.
Before booking
Tell the provider whether access is known and exposed, known but buried, or completely uncertain.
