Drainfield repair or replacement: questions before approval

A major drainfield proposal should explain the diagnosis and available options. Replacement may be appropriate in some cases, but the need cannot be established solely by age, a wet patch or a telephone description.

Review the findings

Ask which parts of the system were evaluated and what evidence supports the conclusion. Obtain the written assessment and identify any limitations, inaccessible components or further tests needed.

Compare real alternatives

If repair and replacement are both proposed, ask what each resolves and what uncertainty remains. Clarify design, permitting, site constraints, access, restoration and who is responsible for each stage.

Set expectations

Get scope changes, payment milestones and any written warranty directly from the contractor. Do not treat a verbal performance promise as equivalent to documented terms or an approved design.
